Project Brainstorming!

- The Subject Matter Expert (SME) is Sharon Farinholt, who is the owner and manager of the Crown Trophy Store in Winchester, VA. She started this business about two years ago and while she understands the needs of her store, she needs a little bit of help making them a reality. She stays extremely busy and never wastes any time. She has a lot of kids, so on top of running a franchise she is also picking kids up from school and managing their schedules as well. In order to balance all of this she has to be organized and she recognizes this.

- The target audience for this instructional design project is Carrie who does most of the engraving, building and processing of orders. While she is very good with customer service and sales, problems sometimes arise because of poor communication between her and Sharon or because the orders are not organized. I'm going to make their order processing more efficient and hopefully reduce errors in their engravings and building of trophies.

- The model for instructional design that I want to use for my project is the Kemp, Morrison, and Ross's Instructional Design Plan Model. I want to use this plan because it seems to work well with the business that I am trying to help. The second step, "examine learner characteristics that will influence your instructional decisions" is a step that I think is very crucial and is one that will be very strong for me and my project because I know the learners and understand how they operate their business. I also think that sequencing the content is a crucial step in developing a step-by-step efficient process for this business.

- The main perspective on learning that I am addressing is behavioral. Right now, there are usually not a whole lot of problems with mistakes and miss-communication, but when they do happen it can cost them a lot of money. If I can change their behavior to organize and process orders differently, then hopefully this can reduce mistakes.

- I again want to use Morrison, Ross, and Kemp's approach to conduct the goal analysis rather than a needs analysis. The problem, or need, has already been presented to me by Sharon and she is basically looking for an intervention. I have all of the steps laid out of the current process that takes place, and my goal is to make it a more efficient process that reduces product mistakes by eliminating steps or adding steps that decrease mistakes without sacrificing too much time.

- Task Analysis

1 comment:

  1. Great description of your SME and target audience! Tell us a little more about their age and demographics, education, years of related experience, etc. More will come in learner analysis.

Be careful – do not let your own knowledge and connections to the client bias your thinking about what the problem is, who the learner is, what will solve the problem, etc.

See p. 47. How, specifically, will you document your goal analysis in the design plan? You must show evidence of finding the cause(s) of the problem and identifying several possible solutions. You will need to show evidence that instruction is/is not the best solution.

What approach will you use to conduct a task analysis? What products will be created to show that you have conducted a full task analysis?
